City Paintings
In the studio working on Paris At Midnight. 2019
Unknown in Paris, I was lost in the great city, but the feeling of living there alone, taking care of myself without any aid, did not at all depress me. If sometimes I felt lonesome, my usual state of mind was one of calm and great moral satisfaction.

Cities and Towns brings together a long running body of paintings that explore how places are structured, remembered, and experienced. I have been painting aerial views of cities since 2003, using the vantage point of the map to translate streets, rivers, parks, and neighbourhood grids into systems of colour, line, and pattern.
Rather than documenting places literally, the works approach the built environment as a set of rhythms shaped by movement, memory, and daily life. Urban centres and small towns are both reduced and reorganized into compositions that sit between cartography and abstraction, where infrastructure becomes pattern and neighbourhoods become fields of colour.
Taken together, these paintings treat places as portraits. Large cities and small towns alike carry the traces of the people who pass through them, and each work attempts to hold that layered structure of lived space. The result is a collection of painted maps that operate both as images of specific places and as reflections on how we move through the landscapes we inhabit.
Many of these works are available as limited edition prints. Commissions are welcome.
