From Italy, With Love is a series of paintings made during a journey through central and northern Italy. In the summer of 2015 I travelled through the region and made paintings of each city I visited. These are those paintings.

Working from aerial perspectives and memories gathered while moving through the cities, each painting translates a place into a system of colour, pattern, and structure. Street networks, rivers, plazas, and coastlines become simplified forms that sit between cartography and abstraction.

The paintings move across the geography of the trip from Rome and Florence through northern towns along Lake Como and into the lagoon of Venice. Taken together, the series reads almost like a visual itinerary, each panel marking a stop along the route. Rather than documenting architecture directly, the works approach cities as patterns of movement and memory, tracing how places register in the mind after travel.
