bar code
‘Bar Code’ is a series of coloured bandanas, hand embroidered with corporate slogans.
Widely used in the 1970’s by gay men to indicate what what kind of sex they are seeking, and whether they are a top or a bottom. Wearing a handkerchief on the left side of the body typically indicates one is a "top" , while wearing it on the right side of the body would indicate one is a "bottom".
Humour is used as vehicle to critique corporate sponsorship of LGBTQ Pride events. Slogans are carefully matched to colours correlated with the ‘hanky code’, a disappearing part of gay men’s culture.
