catch&release
Catch & Release reimagines the tradition of ice fishing through the lens of queer culture, bringing together textile, craft, and installation to reconsider a familiar rural ritual. The exhibition blends vibrant materials and camp aesthetics with objects associated with winter fishing culture, transforming the ice hut, gear, and surrounding environment into a space of reflection on identity, masculinity, and belonging.
Drawing from the visual language of Northern Ontario and the social rituals that gather around frozen lakes, the work considers how queer people have historically navigated visibility and safety in rural spaces. By reworking these traditions through textile fabrication and playful visual shifts, Catch & Release opens a conversation about how cultural practices can be reimagined to make room for different bodies, identities, and ways of moving through the landscape.
